World Championship Tour (WCT) Press Release

Second Round Completed At Bakio
October 22, 2003 (Mundaka, Basque Country) Remaining second round heats of
the Billabong Pro Mundaka were completed today at nearby Bakio. Despite
being on hold throughout the day due to small surf, organizers of the
US$250,000 World Championship Tournament (WCT) expected a swell increase and
got what they wanted - along with a storm.

Chilly winds persisted, but 1-2 ft (0.5m) waves were replaced by an
increasing 3-5 ft (1-1.5m) swell this afternoon. Choppy conditions made wave
selection especially difficult, and passing rainsqualls stopped competitors
from hearing their scores.

Current ratings #5 Joel Parkinson (Gold Coast, Aus) dominated the tricky
conditions to post the highest scores so far against Danilo Costa (Brz). The
Australian opened with a 9.0 and later scored an 8.83 on another
righthander - though couldn't hear the commentators and actually thought he
was losing. Costa, meanwhile, opted for the lefts and managed some big
turns, but still required a combination of rides worth 17.84-points. Parko
will now face fellow countryman Jake Paterson in round three.

"I couldn't hear a thing and thought I needed a seven the whole time,"
explained Parkinson. "It's blowing a gale and raining, so you can only hear
murmurs of what they're saying. I just kept trying to better my waves, as I
thought I was losing. When I was on the inside at the end I finally heard
the situation. Hopefully it cleans up a bit for Mundaka tomorrow."

West Australian Taj Burrow displayed his state of the art aerial surfing
against Californian Tim Curran in the day's first match. The current ratings
#3 was in devastating form in wind affected waves, busting airs and reverse
maneuvers at will. Burrow scored an 8.0 and 7.17 for a comfortable lead,
while Curran waited for better waves but ultimately required a 9-point ride
to catch up.

"I had no idea what was happening or if my waves were scores," said Burrow,
of the windy conditions. "I couldn't hear what Timmy was getting either, so
I was a bit worried. It was definitely fun out there, but more so for a
free-surf cause you don't know if the wave is going to be good until you
take it, which makes it tricky in a heat. Happy to make it though."

Brazilian Victor Ribas gained control of Hawaiian Kalani Robb the following
heat. Despite trailing for most of the low scoring 25-minute clash, Ribas
took the lead with an average righthander, before extending his position
with a strong lefthander in the final seconds to seal victory against Robb
for the first time.

"Earlier today I surfed and there was nothing, but it picked up a lot with
the wind swell," explained Ribas. "We surf waves a lot like this in Brazil.
I'm not very happy with my surfing then, but I found some good lefts and did
a couple of cutbacks. I think it's the first time I've ever beaten Kalani,
so I'm stoked."

Fellow Brazilian Flavio Padaratz then eliminated Luke Egan (Gold Coast, Aus)
in their goofy foot battle. Padaratz picked off superior lefthanders that
ran down the beach and allowed multiple turns, and will now face Danny Wills
in round three after he ousted fellow Australian Shane Powell today.

Lee Winkler (Coff's Harbour, Aus) created an upset by eliminating current #7
Taylor Knox (CA, USA) from the Billabong Pro Mundaka. Winkler held a slender
lead by the 15-minute mark, but poor visibility and lack of hearing had him
thinking the heat was over as he returned to shore. Despite returning to the
lineup, scores remained constant until the end, with Knox still requiring an
additional 5.5 to advance.

"It was just hard out there trying to find the good waves," said Winkler.
"Pretty much luck with who gets them, so I just tried to get ones that
didn't closeout. I couldn't hear anything over the speakers and saw a red
flag (his opponent's priority indicator), so I came in. Cory (Lopez) was on
the beach and told me there was more time, so I headed back out. Stoked I
made it."

Winkler will now face fellow Australian Nathan Hedge (Narrabeen) in round
three, after he won a seesawing battle with Cory Lopez (FL, USA) in the
day's final heat.

An 8am (local time) decision will be made at Mundaka tomorrow morning, with
organizers hoping the swell continues to arrive overnight and allows an
early start.

The Billabong Pro Mundaka is co-sponsored by Fosters, Vans and Von Zipper
and supported by Telefonica, BBK, the "Diputacion de Bizkaia", the "Gobierno
Vasco", the city of Mundaka, the Mundaka Surf Taldea and EHSF (Federation of
Surfing).
