World Championship Tour (WCT) Press Release

Competition Postponed After Initial Heat
October 12, 2003 (Mundaka, Euskadi-Spain) The Billabong Pro at Mundaka
commenced this morning but was then postponed after the initial heat surfed.
Due to inconsistent waves and a decreasing swell, competition went on hold
for an hour, before officials eventually opted to hold off for more
favorable conditions.

Great 3ft (1m) waves were breaking sporadically on the sets, but few and far
between, with most sections impossible to make. The epic sandbar is
producing dream-like barrels, but unfortunately the size isn't here today.
Peterson Rosa (Brz) won the opening heat of the 2003 Billabong Pro Mundaka.

Against Luke Stedman (Avalon, Aus) and Floridian Shea Lopez (USA), the
Brazilian locked in one good ride for a 7.0, while his opponents weren't so
fortunate. The Australian advanced in runner-up position despite below
average scores, and Lopez was actually eliminated from the tournament in
third place, requiring a low 3.23 ride.

Due to the fickle nature of Mundaka, surfers and officials agreed to drop
the usual second 'losers' round, so now the top two place getters in round
one will progress, while those in third collect an equal 33rd result.

"I was so lucky to get the good wave," began Rosa. "There aren't many waves
today, so it's really hard to compete and not good for the surfers. I think
it was too bad we began, but it's good they postponed it now to wait for
better surf. I'm happy I made it, but hopefully we get some bigger waves.

"I love being here in Mundaka with all the mountains around," he added, of
the venue's surroundings. "You can feel the energy here, and the river is
beautiful."

A traditional Basque welcoming ceremony commenced proceedings this morning
at the Billabong Pro Mundaka, with ASP President Wayne 'Rabbit' Bartholomew
making the following comment:

"I'd like to thank Billabong for their overwhelming support of the ASP and
professional surfing in Europe," began Bartholomew. "This event is a very
challenging one, with all the logistics, but what a rare gem Mundaka itself
is. I'd like to wish all the officials the best of luck. I'd like to thank
all the towns' people and locals of Mundaka for supporting this event and
letting us come here to surf your wonderful wave. It's beautiful to see so
much love and support of surfing. I'd also like to wish all of the WCT
surfers the very best."

When round one resumes, Mick Lowe (Windang, Aus) is against Pat O'Connell
(CA, USA) and Danilo Costa (Brz) in the first heat.

Portuguese wildcard Tiago Pires is in heat #5 against Kieren Perrow (Aus)
and Victor Ribas (Brz), before world #2 Joel Parkinson (Aus), Trent Munro
(Aus) and Billabong Europe wildcard Sam Carrier (Aus) do battle.

Defending Billabong Pro Mundaka winner and reigning world champ Andy Irons
(Kauai, Haw), who yesterday claimed his fourth WCT of the year in France,
faces fellow finalist Phil MacDonald (Aus) and wildcard Nathan Yeomans (USA)
in heat #8, and then six-time world champ Kelly Slater (FL, USA) is against
Jake Paterson (Aus) and Billabong USA wildcard Nathan Yeomans.
